During October Carbondale Community Arts continues its 25th Anniversary commemoration, observes National Arts & Humanities month, and embraces the spirit of the homecoming season with E.T. Come Home!

This multi-week event celebrates the Extraordinarily Talented artists whose bodies of work continue to be informed by their experiences in southern Illinois.  It is comprised of exhibits at the University Museum and the Civic Center Corridor Gallery and includes lectures and workshops in area schools.

The University Museum exhibit, CCA’s 13th Biennial Exhibition,  features the work of four extraordinary teaching artists (pictured right and profiled on p.2) who throughout their careers have made concerted efforts to share their skills as strategies for inclusion, discovery, and empowerment. These four are “coming home” from California, Minnesota, northern Illinois, and Texas to rekindle community ties and reprise their roles as cultural workers. In addition to spending time in the classroom, where they will share their stories and skills with community youth, all four will be present on October 19th for a reception in their honor at the Museum.

At Civic Center Corridor Gallery ‘s “People’s Choice” exhibit, the focus will be on Extraordinary Talents who are “coming home” via their artworks either from CCA archives or on loan from area collectors.  Artists represented in the exhibit include Bernice Fischman, Steve Grimmer, John and Phillip Howie,  Sandra McMorris Johnson,  Siona Benjamin, and more.
