Southern Arts Fund

The fund is part of an Illinois Arts Council Community Arts Access program offering grant support to artists and nonprofit organizations providing arts programming or outreach activities in communities throughout Southern Illinois.

Eligible applicants to the Fund include cultural arts groups, community music groups, theater groups, dance collectives, film/video and literary groups, artist collectives, libraries, public and private schools, and other community cultural providers. Individual artists may apply in support of programs that have a significant public outreach component. Except in rare circumstances, a grant request should not exceed $1000, and project budgets should show that Southern Arts Fund dollars are being matched by an equal amount of cash from other sources.

FY2009 First Round Grant Awards

Nine grants were awarded to organizations and individuals in six southern Illinois counties:

  1. Southeastern Illinois Concert Association, LTD., Olney, David A. McNabb, “Two Concerts ,” $1000 to partially fund performance of two concerts on February 20, 2009, by Lynn Wright and Adam DeGraff, and on April 28, 2009, by the Mantini Sisters.
  1. Carrier Mills-Stonefort Schools, Daryl Varble, “OZ.”  $1000 to partially fund performances by Carrier Mills-Stonefort Schools students at the Southeastern Illinois Community College theater on March 13 and 14, 2009

  2. Shawnee District 84, Grand Tower, Leslie Varble, “Cinderella’s Glass Slipper.” $1000 to partially fund performances on April 17 and 18, 2009, by the students from a district that has not experienced a musical production in almost 20 years.

  3. SIUC College of Liberal Arts, Carbondale, Robert DeHoet, "Arts Education Festival 2009."  $1000.The 23rd annual festival will be held on April 15 and 16 for school children in grades 1 through 5 from 22 southern Illinois counties.

  4. Douglass School Art Place, Murphysboro, Jan Thomas and Cameron Smith, “Sand Into Glass:  Arts Education for All.” $1000.  to partially fund a series of glassblowing demonstrations and tours of the Douglass School building for students and local community groups during the 2008-2009 academic year.

  5. Southwestern Illinois College Foundation (Red Bud Campus), Red Bud, Karen Stallman, “Art du Jour.”  $1000.  An annual event during the last weekend in February in which students from area high schools participate in one day of art-related workshops, juried competition, a public reception, and an awards ceremony.

  6. Grace United Methodist Church Handbell Choir, Carbondale, Anne Forby, “Southern Illinois Handbell Workshop and Concert." $1000.00.  to partially fund a one-day workshop in March 2009 for English handbell ringers and a concert for the general public.

  7. SIUC University Museum, Carbondale, Dona Bachman (?), “ARTiculation 2 – Themes and Variations.”  $985.00.  The second annual event brings junior high school and high school students from Anna, Elkville, Pinckneyville, and Ziegler-Royalton to the University Museum for a personal art experience including appreciation, creation, and writing about art. 

  8. Ron Naversen, Makanda, “Creating Masks of Culture:  An Interactive Multi-Media DVD Presentation.”  $1000.00.  Creation of an interactive multimedia DVD presentation about masks and masking practices and performances from many diverse cultures to be made available to schools, colleges, universities, and community and civic groups upon request.

FY2008 Second Round Grant Awards

Nine grants were awarded to organizations and individuals in three southern Illinois counties:

  1. Carbondale Main Street, Meghan Cole, “Brown Bag Concerts,” $1000 to partially fund compensation for musicians who play the one-hour concerts.  The concerts are scheduled for each Wednesday noon from May 7 through September 24.     
  1. Carbondale Park District, Kathy Renfro, “A Night of Entertainment,” $1000 to partially fund camp an Art/Theater Camp of children in grades 1 through 6 and their July 18 performance.  The July 18 celebration of the arts will also include performances by a Gift of Love Charity, Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale, and the Delta Center located in Cairo. 
  1. Ronald E. Coulter, “Sounds You’ve Never Seen Before,” $1000 to partially fund an interactive presentation of percussion and electronic music by Ron Coulter.  Virtual musical instruments, ideas, and sounds will be presented at events to be scheduled in various locations.
  1. English Prairie Quilt Guild, “2008 Quilt Show,” $500 for promotional materials and related costs for the 2008 Quit Show to be held on September 13.  More than 100 quilts will be displayed, and a bed turning and silent auction will be held.  
  1. General John A. Logan Elementary School, Murphysboro, Laura Basanta, “Lunchtime Concerts for Kids,”$800 to partially fund the performances by SIUC students during lunch periods from September through December.  A variety of instruments and musical styles will be highlighted.
  1. Stephanie J. Fisher, “Sew and Believe,” $1000 to partially fund a one-woman storytelling project with staging and visual accompaniment that tells the story of school integration through the eyes of one of the famed “Little Rock Nine,” Elizabeth Eckford.  Performances will be held at the Grand Chain Learning Center JAMP Special Education and at the Community Center of Grand Chain.
  1. Robert Ketchens, “Clocking the Masters,” $1000 to fund the artist, Robert Ketchens, to instruct the students of the Meridian School District in Mounds  about the Masters of the Harlem Renaissance and to teach the student to produce their own work (a clock) based on the “Master” of choice.  
  1. Kevin Lucas Orchestra, “Operation Give Hope II,” $1000 to support performances in nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Carbondale and the region during June and July.  “Operation Give Hope I” was very well received by the residents and staff of the six facilities where Kevin performed in 2007.
  1. Thomas School Strings Program, Linda Flowers, $1000, to partially fund Suzuki violin/viola lessons for 2d and 3d grade students at Thomas School and to continue to develop a model for replication of the program in schools throughout the region.
